Mainstream ideas can have profound deleterious influences and effects when the ideas are wrong. For instance, ideas in the 1950s that the woman is always wrong – an idea propagated in marriage-advice columns even when the marriage involved extensive abuse to the woman involved. Unfortunately, such horrifying counselling advice went on for years. Given in the article are examples of victims of such advice. It also tells us how the ideas became less mainstream, how a healthy marriage is still considered to be a woman’s work and how we still have a long way to go.
