Several creative artists created masterpieces in the darkest periods of their life. Rembrandt, a great painter of the seventeenth century, painted some of his best works in the last fifteen years of his life while losing his wife, his only son and his reputation. His paintings were far ahead of his time, some of them unappreciated during his time, but these show a master craftsman at work.
I remember that in my amateurish attempts at sketching and painting, getting the illumination right (which areas of the painting would be lit and which areas would be darker) was difficult. Rembrandt was skilled at depicting light correctly, showing emotions vividly, and getting the detailing correct that make his paintings outstanding.
Here was a rare artist who not only was skilled but could also bring out the emotions of his subjects very well.
