At a friend’s place, when her toddler came running to her complaining that his cousin was fighting with him, she told the toddler to “deal with it”. She explained that she intervenes when his older cousin gets rough but otherwise she lets the toddler be – and learn to play and deal with uncomfortable things like fight.
Children must be raised with tender loving care. Their innocence must be preserved. But, for how long? If we do not expose children to certain harsh realities, will they truly be able to be on their own when they come of age.

The author also discusses things like when introducing disturbing literature such as one on the holocaust, rapes or murder to students, should the teacher issue trigger warnings beforehand? Time to move beyond our perceptions of fragility.
